Simple Italian Cooking at a Great price in Rockville. "Situated in a small strip shopping center in the shadow of the imposing Far East restaurant, Il Pinito does not look impressive. With the exception of a pair of ceiling fans, simply brass chandeliers, and nice photographs encircling the dining area, the dcor is plain. The food and prices however are remarkable. The Menu is simple, with many standard Italian-restaurant dishes-sauted mushrooms, white and red pizzas, plenty of pastas, shrimp and other seafood, and veal, sausage, and chicken dishes, most served with spaghetti. A look at the daily specials and a few explanations from the attentive serving staff reveal some special touches. The tasty bread is house-made; diners can substitute sauted or steam vegetables or a salad for the pasta that's served with the main courses; the chicken cacciatore is made with dark and white meat with bone in rather than with just chicken breasts; and daily specials are first-rate. The wine list is short but fairly priced. Standard starters like the house cold antipasto, sauted peppers, eggplant parmigiana, and fried zucchini are good. But eclipsing these are the fagioli, bianchi, sauted mushrooms, fried calamari, and clam or mussel soup. The flavorful mushrooms are cooked with garlic and pieces of proscuito. The clams and mussels are served in a vibrant broth with garlic, parsley, onions and white wine that invites you to stop it up with bread. Pastas are excellent, generous, and cheap. When ordered al dente, they come al dente. Sauces, including a robust tomato sauce, are house-made. Spaghetti with sausage or meatballs and the house tomato sauce is enough to satisfy a large appetite. More-ambitious offerings were good, too. Clams with linguine and white or red sauce featured a dozen clams in the shell along with the expected seasonings.
