In the early 1930's the Army at Rockwell Field, North Island in San Diego needed to relocate their aviation general supply and repair operation. Rancho del Paso was selected for the new site. By November 1938, the Depot was shipping supplies from its new facilities. The following year the base name was changed from Sacramento Air Depot to McClellan Field, honoring Major Hezekiah McClellan who died in an airplane crash. With the outbreak of World War II, and the need for increased military posture, McClellan, the only depot on the west coast, surged up and bore the brunt of air logistics to the Pacific. Between this war and the Korean War, the US Air Force was established; McClellan's activity increased as new units were activated. By June 1950, when the Korean War broke out, McClellan's repair processing time improved considerably due to technological advances and teletype links between Far East Air Force and Sacramento Air Material Area.In 1952, decentralization of Air Material Command occurred and many additional duties were picked up. In addition to aircraft management, they also managed aircraft auxiliary fuel tanks, electrical generator sets, and print and reproduction equipment. As the Korean War drew to a close, the Air Force cancelled McClellan's B-29 projects and took on more fighters and interceptors. Additional projects and ideas sparked after the Sputnik launch in 1957 - the depot expanded its expertise from exclusive aircraft support to include management of satellite systems. Since the beginning of McClellan's history, technology has been in the forefront of maintaining and repairing high tech systems. Through the depot modernization efforts of the 1960's and early 1970's into the space age of the 1980's, McClellan took on greater technological management missions such as the F-22, advanced composites, fiber optics, and very high-speed integrated circuits. Ethiopian food is more communal than almost any other type of ethnic food. The hallmark of Ethiopian cuisine consists of sharing food on one giant plate and using enjera a spongy, sour, pliable flat bread to scoop up the various shared dishes. enjera is the common thread of almost every meal for Ethiopia's middle and upper classes. Prepared much as it was 1,000 years ago, enjera is both an eating utensil and a palette for other foods to lie on. It lines the giant plate, soaking up the sauces and spices of the various dishes piled on top. The eating of this lining or "tablecloth" signifies that the meal is officially over, completing the communal Ethiopian dining experience. Zion Taddese and her brother Eskinder opened Queen Sheba Restaurant on Howe Avenue in August of 2003. Together, the siblings offer friendly and attentive service along with spicy, flavorful dishes that follow the traditions of Ethiopian dining. You can enjoy, the famed honey wine, tej, which Ethiopians often make themselves, with a unique taste that complements the spices in the food. Combination plates on the menu, allow you to sample different dishes arranged symmetrically on a giant plate. Dishes such as Gomen, a dish of cooked spinach, collard greens, onions and garlic. Gomen may remind you of collards in soul-food cooking. Then experience, miser kik wot (wot meaning "stew"), a satisfying, mild-flavored dish made with lentils and spices. In the combination you will find two similar-tasting dishes, doro wot and gored gored. Doro wot is a popular dish with chicken leg and hard-boiled egg, served on a dark bed of simmered vegetables and spices. It has the color, consistency and heat of a fiery chili. Doro wot is of the chicken family, the gored gored has cubes of beef in a similar mixture, spiced in Ethiopian fashion, with berbere.

In 1983 the Vallejo Family opened a small Deli in the Midtown area of Sacramento that served fine Mexican Food to-go. In 1992 they moved to a downtown location and opened Vallejo's Mexican Restaurant at 1331 O Street. It was a hit from day one, with great authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices. Next they added another downtown location at 1900 4th Street, which has both inside and patio dining. A third restaurant was added at 1100 O Street, which specializes in authentic Mexican Seafood. All of the restaurants offer their own unique differences. The 13th Street location is the smallest and is very casual. The 11th and O Street restaurant is more upscale, which some may refer to as business casual. This location has a large well stocked bar and the seafood offerings are delicious. My favorite is the 4th Street location, which is in a remodeled early 20's building in Sacramento's Historic Old Red-Light District. You may choose from inside, sidewalk or patio areas for you dining. Vallejo's has a very generous selection of domestic and imported beers.
